On Armed Forces Day, a day originally meant to commemorate the start of the Burmese resistance to the Japanese occupation during World War II (but later hijacked by the Burmese Army to celebrate itself), coup leader Min Aung Hlaing vows once again to annihilate the Resistance and its supporters. He reiterates that the generals have no intention to negotiate with the opposition. Today, just like on any other day since the military coup, the Burmese army launched airstrikes in Karen and Kachin State, fired artillery at villages and even burned a respected Buddhist monk to death. A decent army is there to defend its civilians, to provide logistics for humanitarian help, to serve its people. The so-called Tatmadaw is just protecting the generals’ interests and nothing else. Just like any other fascist army, it claims to protect the country, its identity, its religion. But what makes a country? Its people. What forms the country’s identity and culture? Its people. The same people they have been killing and oppressing for decades.

One day, hopefully soon, there will be a day in which Myanmar people will commemorate the liberation from the Burmese army.

The regime will fall, and March 27th will regain its original meaning
