The flag in the picture represents Myanmar student unions.
It should not be confused with the flag of the National League for Democracy (NLD, the political party led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi), which does not have a circle around the peacock, but has a white star on it.
The military regime is abolishing all student unions and ordered all universities across the country to remove all union’s signs, memorials, flags and offices.
It’s not unexpected, but still infuriating.
The military regime is trying to destroy any democratic institution. Journalists have been arrested, news outlets banned. Trade unions have been targeted. NLD offices have been raided, destroyed or seized. Almost all NLD politicians have been arrested. All celebrities supporting the democratic movement have been jailed or are still on the run. The few who have been released, don’t dare to even say a word anymore. Pro-democracy activists and politicians have been stripped off of their citizenship. Internet has been severely restricted, all major social media platforms have been blocked, and even having a VPN is now illegal. In some regions internet has been shut down altogether for months now. Phone calls are tapped. All satellite dishes have been seized, and people can only watch military-owned TV channels. Peacefully protesting in Myanmar is almost impossible (yet our Burmese friends, still do it with incredible courage). People who get caught while protesting are guaranteed to end up in jail. Some have been tortured, and some (over 1,600) have been killed. You can’t even say the word “coup”. And now dozens of villages have been torched to the ground.
The generals are afraid of the people and its unity.
Please remember this picture. The military regime can rip every flag, silence opposition leaders and abolish any union, but the flame of democracy lives in the hearts and the minds of millions of Myanmar people.
The regime will fall
