As reported yesterday, a mother and her 2 teenage daughters (13 and 16 years old) have been killed and burned by regime soldiers in Sagaing. Myanmar Now reports that according to local residents, they were hiding in a sunflower field when “The soldiers threatened to torch their house if they didn’t come out from where they were hiding,”.
POLITICS, ECONOMY AND OTHER NEWS
• Fuel price is skyrocketing in conflict areas in Kachin State, Karenni State and Sagaing Region. Locals report prices as high as 10,000 kyats (5 USD) per liter, while in the rest of the country one liter costs around 3,000 kyats, more than double the pre-coup price.
• Serbia rejects accuses that it sold weapons to the Burmese military after the coup. Tom Andrews, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, exposed several countries dealing with the Tatmadaw, including Russia and China, calling for an arms embargo.
• Thant Zin Aung (38), a lieutenant from police intelligence who raised money to help officers defecting from the junta has been jailed for three years after he was lured into a trap by Myanmar’s chief of police (the infamous Than Hlaing) and arrested late last year, a colleague of his has said. • Zaw Win Ko, a lieutenant colonel has been arrested by the military regime for posting a comment on social media on the car attack on young protesters on Pan Pin Gyi Road
• A lieutenant colonel under the junta defected from the army and joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) on Thursday, according to officers who had already joined the resistance. (Source: Myanmar Now). It’s the highest rank known to have defected.
• The National Unity Government (NUG, the democratic government that opposes the military regime), released a statement of solidarity towards Ukraine, condemning the act of aggression by Putin’s Russia. Yesterday the Burmese military expressed support to the Russian regime, applauding the invasion of Ukraine
• Germany did not renew the visa for Brigadier General Aung Kyaw Moe, a military attachè at the Burmese embassy, and 4 soldiers from his entourage. Pro-democracy activists started calling for their expulsion one year ago.
• AGD Bank, announced that Visa International interrupted their partnership, and all Visa credit cards will be cancelled.
CHIN STATE
• Thantlang: regime soldiers set several civilian houses on fire once again. Nearly 1,000 houses have been burned since the arrival of the Burmese military
SAGAING
• Shwebo: regime soldiers killed 15 people and burned the entire Hnamazayit village down
• Taze: pro-military forces shot and then burned Ne Win Tun, a 47-year-old civilian in Chaungzon
• Taze: regime soldiers tortured, killed and burned Ko Soe Moe in Kan Kale Kone village
• Shwebo: Resistance fighters claim to have killed a pro-military local administrator and 2 Pyu Saw Htee members (a pro-military militia), but it has been reported that one of the victims was not the local administrator, but U La Yaung, an innocent civilian, probably killed by mistake.
KARENNI (KAYAH) STATE
• Nang Mae Khon: an airstrike by the military regime killed one Resistance fighter and destroyed several houses.
MANDALAY
• Aung Myay Thar San: Resistance fighters bombed a military vehicle near the post office between 66th, 22nd and 23rd Streets
MAGWAY
• Yezakyo: Resistance fighters killed an officer and a soldier on the Pakokku-Chaung U
ARAKAN (RAKHINE) STATE
• The Arakan Army (AA) issued a stay-at-home order, following a rise of Covid cases in the State
• Sittwe: Ko Hlaing Myo Aung, a staffer of the NGO Lutheran World Federation, has been arrested for incitement under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code, for a Facebook post
• Gwa Township: 2 men have been arrested on Feb 19th on suspicion of financially supporting the armed Resistance
• The Arakan Army (AA) announced it will evict squatters living near the soon-to-be renovated Sittwe-Pyitawthar-Yaychanpyin rail route
BAGO
• Daw Mar Mar Aye, a high school teacher, has been arrested and her properties have been seized on suspicion of supporting the armed Resistance
YANGON
• Mayangone: a Resistance fighter was killed, and 2 other injured during a raid by regime soldiers
• South Okkalapa: around 40 Rohingyas have been reportedly arrested by the military regime yesterday.
• Several restaurants and shops have been bombed by Resistance fighters for selling military-owned Myanmar Beer
MON STATE
• Bilin, Thaton: clashes between the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) (Brigade 1) and regime soldiers. 5 regime soldiers killed.
