It appears that the military regime will adopt a proportional system (PR) for the next elections (if and when they will take place, is yet to be seen), a much anticipated move that we explained here. Although PR is not inherently bad, it would be an incredibly unfair system given that the military regime starts with a 25% advantage (the 25% of seats that the Tatmadaw reserved to the military according when drafting the 2008 Constitution) .
The little piece by RFA (see link below) on Htet Htet Eaindra Aung, a journalist who had to flee to the jungle in Karenni State, to continue reporting what is happening in Myanmar, is a strong testimony of the current state of journalism in the country. Journalists have been charged, arrested, tortured, killed. News outlets have been banned, and their offices have been raided and destroyed. Independent TV channels are not visible anymore. There can’t be any democracy without journalism, its role is fundamental in a free country.
Deep respect for all Burmese journalists and improvised citizen reporters who keep risking their lives to report the events in Burma.
Journalism is not a crime, may journalism flourish again in Myanmar.
