The Irrawady recapped some of the worst massacres committed by the military regime in 2021. It is hard to believe all of this happened in such a short time span. 15 victims in North Okkalapa, back in March. Then Hlaing Thar Yar (over 50 victims), Bago (80), Yanmabin (10), Tabayin (40), Kani (40), Gangaw (18), Salingyi (10), Tabayin (6), Kalay (10), Hpruso (35). In reality these are only some of crimes against humanity committed by the junta. Nearly 1,400 civilians have been murdered since February, thousands instead died of Covid, victims of the military’s mismanagement of the pandemic crisis. Hundreds if not thousands died for the lack of healthcare, lack of access to basic needs, malnutrition, and displacement. An unspecified number of Resistance fighters and ethnic armed groups members sacrificed for democracy. Dozens of prisoners died under detention or during interrogations. But numbers don’t fully capture what is happening in Myanmar. The lives of millions have been destroyed by the greed of few generals. Education has been interrupted, jobs have been lost, futures have been stolen.
The Revolution is not about the elections, about Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, or about who gets to hold power. It’s a fight for human rights and democracy, against a terrorist group.
May 2022 be the year in which the military regime will be swept away, and the people will finally be free from oppression.
