A “Silent Strike” was observed nationwide from 10am to 4pm. to protest against the military regime. People emptied the streets, by closing their shops and staying home. The protest was very successful. Video and images from all over Myanmar show deserted cities, including Yangon (a city of over 5 million inhabitants), Mandalay and Naypyidaw, where the generals live. But really all the country joined the strike, even in the small villages, despite threats by the soldiers who roamed the markets forcing shop owners to open their activities, sometimes with violence (i.e. in Monywa). In Hledan, Yangon, soldiers retaliated against shop owners, by ordering them to close for 3 days for “Covid”. In other townships, authorities ordered shops who joined the protest, to not reopen without an official permission.
At 4pm people ended the strike with a loud applause. A reminder that Myanmar belongs to the people.
Unfortunately the silent strike did not stop the regime from brutally killing innocent people. In Sagaing, at least a dozen villagers have been killed by the regime or pro-regime groups, including 3 minors.
In Thantlang, Chin State, 3 members of the Resistance have been beheaded. It’s unbelievable that the Burmese military is not considered a terrorist group, only because it claims to represent the government.
There have been very few news coming out of Arakan State lately, but tensions between the Arakan Army (AA) and the Tatmadaw seem to be increasing, despite the recent visit of Yohei Sasakawa, the Japanese Special Envoy to Myanmar, who helped brokering an informal ceasefire between the two armies in the past. The Arakan Army today released a statement urging Rakhine people to be cautios and warning them that the situation could escalate into a war.
The Arakan Army is considered by many observers, as one of the most powerful ethnic armed organizations in Myanmar. After the coup the AA, who is seeking independence from Burma, took advantage of the political situation to strengthen its control in Rakhine State
