POLITICS, ECONOMY AND OTHER NEWS
• 6.0 earthquake in Chin State this morning. It was felt in some other regions too.
• Following the boycott of Myanmar Plaza, the military decided to send more soldiers to lockdown and guard the almost empty building. It appears they feared attacks by Resistance groups. Myanmar Place released a statement confirming that the guards involved in the punching of peaceful protesters, have been dismissed.
• Captain Win Ko Ko Ohn of the 11th Defense Equipment Factory (Taiggyi, Yangon), has been arrested after buying bonds sold by the National Unity Government (NUG, the parallel government that opposes the regime). Military spokesperson Zaw Min Tun said at a presser hat buying NUG bonds constitutes supporting terrorism, and can be charged under the counter-terrorism law.
• Lieutenant General Sein Win and Lieutenant General Ye Aung reportedly forced to retire. They both served as ministers under the NLD-led government
• The Central Bank of Myanmar ordered banks to investigate civilians who make donations through mobile apps. As banks are limiting cash withdrawals, mobile apps have been widely used to transfer money between citizens.
• Activists are urging retail giants Amazon, Walmart and Overstock to ban the sale of Myanmar precious gems. Justice For Myanmar revealed that Indian company Vaibhav Global Limited, was selling these gems on American online stores. Since then VGL appears to have removed its catalogues. Gems, in particular jade, are an important source of finance for the regime. Some foreign countries have sanctioned MGE, Myanma Gems Enterprise.
CHIN STATE
• Hakha: 6.0 earthquake this morning. In Lungcawi the Believers’ Church was damaged.
• The Chindwin reports that Diaspora Zophei Chin Communities have reportedly donated USD 771,275 USD (over 14 billion kyats) to Chinland Defense Force.
SAGAING
• Butalin: artillery fired by regime soldiers hit a monastery, injuring 7 internal displaced people who were sheltering in the religious building.
• Taze: Resistance fighters attacked and killed 3 regime soldiers. The situation in the area is tense, with thousands of civilians forced to flee.
SHAN STATE
• Kutkhine: 3 men riding their motorbikes were shot by an unidentified armed group. 26 year-old Ko Kwan Aung died.
KACHIN STATE
• Du Up Daju Nbang Bum Sin Wa , member of the KIO Central Committee, died today.
MANDALAY
• Yamethin: a Myanmar Apex Bank was robbed by two gunmen who escaped with approximately 100 million kyats (56.000 USD)
• A series of explosions in several townships
ARAKAN (RAKHINE) STATE
• Buthidaung: an unverified document leaked online, apparently signed by the Township Administrator, announces more severe restrictions of movement for Rohingya people. Rohingyas (referred as “bengali” in the document, as the military, but not only, refuses to recognize they belong to Myanmar), will be persecuted if found travelling without prior permission.
BAGO
• DVB reports that political prisoners in Bago prison are being forced to do hard labour
COVID DAILY (as reported by the military-controlled Ministry of Health. Real figures are believed to be higher than officially reported)
• 493 new cases and 9 new deaths
