A little thought on Cop26. To see politicians celebrating their compromises and patting their own backs in a do-or-die situation, is just angering. I would compare it to a fireman celebrating after saving one person from a building on fire full of thousands of people.
The fact that “poorer” countries and youths had no voice at the meeting is also ridiculous. Countries like Myanmar, did very little to contribute to climate change compared to more industrialized countries, but will pay the highest prices for the decision of the most powerful countries. Myanmar is one of the most vulnerable nations to climate change and extreme weather and we are already seeing the effects. Temperatures in the the dry zone have become unbearable during the dry season (up to 45 degress Celsius). Heavy rains are causing several floods, including in traditionally dry regions like Bagan, where dozens of temples have been damaged by the water. Sea level rise would threaten coastal areas, including the Ayeyarwady river delta. According to Surging Seas, Yangon could be completely under water by the end of the century.
Another note: happy birthday to Thinzar Shunley Yi!
