2 children were killed, one in Shan State and one in Kawthaung (Tanintharyi). Several were injured, including a 2 year old in Monekoe. The violence perpetrated by the regime is unspeakable.
The regime announced a ceasefire one week ago, but the conflict continues on all fronts. The new commander of operations in Sagaing/Magway/Chin State Lieutenant General Than Hlaing is sending more troops in the area. Many believe the Tatmadaw is planning major operations, especially after urgently evacuating military families from Kalay.
When dealing in a situation like the one unfolding in Myanmar, in which it is clear who the oppressors and who the victims are, remaining “neutral”, like the ASEAN’s special envoy to Myanmar Erywan Yusof wants to be, is not an option. When there is a criminal, and a victim to a crime, how can you stay neutral? This is another proof that ASEAN is unwilling and unable to address the Myanmar crisis. A special envoy who has yet to set foot on the country’s soil after 254 days is a joke. Well, ASEAN is a joke.
POLITICS, ECONOMY AND OTHER NEWS
• During his testimony in front of a court in Naypyitaw, President U Win Myint revealed that on February 1st, the day of the coup, 2 army officers entered his room and asked him to resign for health reason, threatening him of physical consequences if he refused. U Win Myint reported that before being arrested, he replied that he would rather die than resign. Despite the Burmese generals claiming they acted according to the 2008 Constitution (that was drafted by the Tatmadaw itself), their political takeover was technically illegal. Firstly, a State of emergency can only be declared by the President of the Union himself. Instead it was declared by a newly appointed vice President (retired general Myint Swe), who came into power only after U Win Mying was arrested. According to the law, the President of the Union can not be arrested without being impeached and since U Win Myint did not resign, there was no valid reason for a vice President to take over. Moreover, the reason for the State of emergency is an alleged voter fraud, but 1) At the time of the coup there was no evidence of it. The 2020 elections were considered legitimate by neutral observers, including international ones. 2) According the Constitution a State of emergency can only be called is a violent insurgency or (ironically) a coup.
• ASEAN’s special envoy to Myanmar Erywan Yusof was scheduled to meet all political parties in Myanmar today, but the trip was delayed. The reason is not clear, although the Election Commission (controlled by the regime), did not invite NLD to the meeting. Erywan Yusof says he will remain “neutral” and not take sides.
• Rising fuel prices (from 655 kyats to 1900 kyats), the closure of China’s border, and the kyat inflation, is pushing freight companies to close.
• The NUG has released a report suggesting that, based on its data, there were over 153 instances of “crimes against humanity” being committed against civilians in the month between September 7 and October 7 (Source: DVB)
• According to the regime’s minister of information Maung Maung Ohn, movie theaters will soon reopen. Most popular actors and directors have been arrested after the coup
• The regime warned the public not to use fireworks during the next Thadingyut celebration, to avoid Resistance fighters to take advantage of the celebrations to carry their attacks.
• British American Tobacco announced it will cease production and sales in Myanmar. Many international companies left Myanmar, as it became impossible to do business under the current regime.
YANGON
• Thomwa: various local administrators resigned after receiving a warning by Resistance fighters of the Thongwa Youth Force
MANDALAY
• Myingyan: a man wearing a military uniform was killed by Resistance fighters. He was later found to have a fake gun and knife.
• Natogyi: 3 injured in an explosion at the township General Administration court
• Chan Mya Tharsi: a military informant was killed
SAGAING
• Taung Pyin Nge, Ye U, Shwebo: 2 PDF soldiers killed and burnt by regime soldiers

• A large military convoy, with 88 trucks and armored tanks, is heading to Mindat Town, Chin State from their base in Pakokku Town in Magway region this morning, according to a local media outfit, Zalen.
