The Tatmadaw punishing its own people is nothing new, but the murder of its own commander of military operations in Sagaing (see news below), is still shocking, if confirmed.

ASEAN is in a very difficult spot. It has shielded the Burmese generals so far, while the international community is waiting for ASEAN to be able to handle the Myanmar crisis (humanitarian, medical and political). When the 5 points consensus was agreed in April, ASEAN probably overestimated the capacity of the Tatmadaw to quickly stabilize the situation. But with the Burmese generals being unable to get control of the country, and refusing to cooperate with its neighbouring countries, ASEAN’s reputation is being damaged, and there are some (mild) signs of impatience. The Malaysian Foreign Minister indicated that there is a chance that the generals would not be invited at the next summit, and that Malaysia is ready to hold talks with the opposing NUG. These may be empty threats though.

POLITICS, ECONOMY AND OTHER NEWS
(Unverified) According to some rumors, commander brigadier general Phyo Thant, who has been recently replaced by Chief of Myanmar Police Lieutenant General Than Hlaing as chief of military operations in Sagaing, has died under interrogation by regime forces. He was arrested for his poor performance in Sagaing and was suspected to be helping Resistance fighters. PDF has been very strong in this region and is seriously threatening the Tatmadaw.
The Pandora Papers, a leak of millions of files exposing how world leaders, businessmen and celebrities hide their money in off-shore companies and accounts, unmasked Myanmar former minister of agriculture Major General Nyunt Tin. According to the files, he was client of Singaporean Asiaciti Trust. In 2002 Asiaciti set up two shell companies for his family. General Nyunt Tin was fired in 2004, charged with corruption and put under house arrest. Many observers believe most Burmese generals own bank accounts and assets in Singapore.
Malaysia Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah said that Malaysia is ready to hold talks with the National Unity Government (NUG, the democratic government that opposes the regime), if the Burmese military regime continues to ignore the ASEAN five points consensus signed in April.
Zaw Min Tun, spokesperson of the military regime, confirmed that the ASEAN special envoy to Myanmar will not be allowed to meet Aung San Suu Kyi. He also says that the regime is not worried about The Malaysian Foreign Minister saying that Myanmar might not be allowed to attend the next ASEAN summit.
According to Justice for Myanmar, 18 Burmese navy personnel have been denied entry in Ukraine and have been deported. They flew to Malaysia to apply for visas at the Ukraine’s embassy in Kuala Lumpur. The Myanmar army is working with two Ukrainian state-owned arms companies: Ukroboronservice and Zorya-Mashproyekt.
