MYANMAR NEWS: 4th October (eng+ita)

Facebook is down since 10.10 pm (Myanmar Time), together with WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.

The worldwide outage comes just hours after “60 minutes” aired an episode featuring former Facebook Product Manager Frances Haugen, who said: “Facebook, over and over again, has shown it chooses profit over safety” and “I don’t trust that they’re willing to actually invest what needs to be invested to keep Facebook from being dangerous.”. According to F. Haugen, Facebook is not willing to keep its platform safe, for fear of losing its audience and revenue.

Facebook played a huge role in Myanmar in 2017, by failing to remove thousands of anti-Rohingya posts that featured fake news, propaganda and hate speech. Despite the tech giant’s resistance, an American judge recently ordered the popular social media platform to let the Gambia government access those posts. Gambia is looking to use them in a genocide case against the Tatmadaw at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). In 2017 thousands of Rohingya were killed in few months, and over 700,000 were forced to flee to Bangladesh, where they currently live as refugees.

Despite Facebook’s reassurance that it is trying to keep its platform as safe as possible, still today there are thousands of Burmese pro-military Facebook accounts that share fake news and hate speech, without any consequence.
