The bomb blast that killed 1 civilian and injured 9 in downtown Yangon, is generating debates on Burmese social media. On one side pro-military accounts, blame the Resistance for this attack, on the other side pro-democracy accounts are highly skeptical of these claims, and believe the military junta is responsible for the attack. The lack of a motive for the Resistance to attack civilians, surely raises many doubts on the junta’s claims, but it does not exclude an accident, a miscalculation or a mistake by the perpetrators.
Democracy is a never-ending process, not a goal to reach, and democratic practices have to be implemented as soon as possible, not only after defeating the military regime. The fact that the National Unity Government (NUG) denounced the attack is the right move, and an investigation should follow. Whoever is responsible for the attack should be held accountable, regardless of their political ideas. Is the PDF responsible for the attack? Probably not, but the victims and their families surely deserve justice, and there will be no justice without any investigation.
It’s extremely important for the NUG to act as any legitimate government, if it wants to be recognized as such. Although the NUG is working under extreme pressure and difficult conditions, the battle for legitimacy against the military regime is an important one, and one of the few we can win without weapons.
