The UN General Assembly voted to suspend Russia from the UN Human Rights Commission (UNHCR), following its invasion of Ukraine. Myanmar, which is currently represented by the NLD-appointed ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun, voted in favour of the suspension. The military regime has been trying to remove Kyaw Moe Tun from his position during the past year. A plan to kill the diplomat was discovered by American authorities last summer in New York. Myanmar and Philippines are the only ASEAN countries to have voted in favour of Russia’s suspension. Myanmar is the only country in mainland South-East Asia to have supported the suspension. India, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Cambodia and Thailand abstained, while Vietnam and Laos voted against.
