At least 17 people were killed and dozens went missing when a landslide hit a jade mine in Hpakant, Kachin State. Landslides are very common in jade mines, and dozens of jade miners die every year. In July 2020, a single landslide killed 174 miners. Myanmar accounts for 70% of the world’s jade supply, with China being the most important trade partner of the military-controlled Myanmar Gem Enterprise (MGE). A large part of the production is traded on the black market.
According to DVB, at least 21 dead bodies have been found after a military raid in Chin Pone, Sagaing (yesterday we reported 9 deaths). During the raid 80 children have been held hostage and later released by regime soldiers.

POLITICS, ECONOMY AND OTHER NEWS
• According to The Irrawaddy, the Burmese military held an emergency meeting on February 26th to discuss how the conflict in Ukraine might effect Myanmar. Sources reported that the generals re worried about Myanmar being invaded by its neighbor China, just like Russia did with Ukraine.
• The Burmese Office of the Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services announced an extension of the ceasefire with ethnic armed organizations until the end of 2022. The military junta announced multiple ceasefires with EAOs since the coup, but they have never been respected so far. The People’s Defense Forces (PDF), an armed group formed following the 2021 military coup, is not recognized as an EAO, but deemed as a terrorist group by the Burmese military.
• Myanmar’s Foreign Affairs Ministry extends entry restrictions for all travelers until the end of March
• According to Myanmar Now, the military regime is planning to dismiss some police department, and transfer policemen into other military forces
• The military government complained of biased coverage by foreign media. Since the coup, over 115 journalists have been arrested, including foreign ones, and around 40 still under detention. 3 journalists have been killed while covering events in Myanmar post-coup.
• The International Crime Court (ICC) chief persecutor Karim AA Khan ended his first visit to Cox’s Bazar’s Rohingya Refugee camp. The ICC is investigating the Burmese generals for the 2017 Rohingya genocide. Last week the International Court of Justice (ICJ) held the Gambia v Myanmar provisional measures hearings, in which the State of Myanmar is being investigated for its role in the same genocide.

CHIN STATE
• Access to internet services has been limited by the military regime.

SAGAING
• Yinmarpin: 2 civilians have been killed in yesterday’s airstrike in Thapyay Aye Village
• Kanbalu: Win Kyaing, suspected to be a military informant, has been killed in Pazigyi Village
• Myinmu: Htay Htay and Ye Min Khaung, both accused to be military informants, have been killed in Sap Pya Kyin village
• Chaung U: a Pyu Saw Htee member has been killed in Kalargyi village
• According to Khit Thit Media, General Min Aung Hlaing ordered 77 pro-military militia groups to be formed

KACHIN STATE

• Monekoe: the Burmese 287th Infantry Battalion attacked the Kokang Army (MNDAA) during the preparations of a funeral

• Resistance fighters attacked a military security checkpoint on the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway

• Pakkoku: Aye Mon San, an alleged military informant, has been killed by an unidentified gunman

YANGON
• Hlaing Thar Yar: massive fires in Ngwepinlay industrial zone. The cause of the fires is unknown
• Kyeemyindaing Township: Myint Aung, a retired deputy police chief, and Zaw Win, a deputy police chief have been arrested for criticizing the December military 5th attack on peaceful protesters on social media. A truck led by regime soldiers ran over peaceful protesters on Pan Pin Gyi Street and left at least five people dead.

TANINTHARYI
• Palaw: clashese between Resistance fighters and pro-military militia group Pyu Saw Htee in Thamin Masar Village
• Pawa: regime soldiers set fire to several houses prompting residents to flee

BANGLADESH
