Today marks 5 years since U Ko Ni was murdered at Yangon International Airport. A constitutional law expert, he served as a legal adviser to the National League for Democracy, and was behind the idea of creating the State Counsellor role for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who was barred from becoming president by the 2008 military constitution. After the 2015 elections, many were hoping for Myanmar to quickly transition into a real democracy, but his assassination reminded everyone that, the power was still in the hands of the military.
Political assassinations have been quite common in Myanmar, and the military regime has recently sentenced to death several of its opposers.
