Airstrikes in Lay Kay Kaw continue, despite promises by the regime of a Christmas ceasefire. Civilians keep fleeing the area, often finding shelter in the jungles or crossing the Thai border. The number of indiscriminate attacks on civilians by the Tatmadaw is unbelievable, and it’s hard to understand the lack of action by the international community. Nobody is asking a direct military intervention anymore, but sanctioning MOGE (Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise, the largest source of revenue for the regime), and a no flight zone are the bare minimum foreign countries and the UN could do. Instead, what the Burmese people get, is empty statements and foreign business trying to take advantage of the situation by engaging with the military. And it’s not just China and Russia. “Democracies” like the US, EU, Canada, UK, India, Japan, South Korea, Australia are all involved in this.
We have to be better than this.
