The situation in Karen State continues to be critical. The ongoing battle between the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and the regime’s army is intensifying. The regime is recording several losses, with 18 deaths in one day.
POLITICS, ECONOMY AND OTHER NEWS
• According to the National Unity Government, at least 18 regime soldiers have been killed and 8 from the Light Infantry Battalion (LIB 275) and the BGF have been captured during yesterday’s battle in Lay Kay Kaw, between the Karen National Liberation Army and the Tatmadaw. Other armed groups, including the NUG People’s Defense Forces, joined the battle against the junta
• Interesting article by the Wall Street Journal in collaboration with Justice For Myanmar, about the importance of oil and gas revenue for the Burmese regime. Letters obtained by JFM show how coup leader Min Aung Hlaing is concerned about not receiving payments related to the Yetagun pipeline project, operated by Petronas (Malaysia), Mitsubishi (Japan), PTTEP (Thailand) and the Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE). MOGE is one of the largest sources of revenue for the regime, and pro-democracy activists have been calling for sanctions against it. • Tun Khin, president of the Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK (BROUK), arrived in Buenos Aires, Argentina to testify in the ongoing case against the Burmese military for the 2017 Rohingya genocide. The case was launched under the principle of universal jurisdiction following a recommendation by the UN’s Fact Finding Mission on Myanmar to the international community to use the principle to finally bring justice for Rohingya people.
• Daw Aung San Suu Kyi appeared in court today, wearing prison uniform, after being sentenced to 4 years of prison (later converted to 2 years) earlier this month. She is still facing several dubious charges, in what appears to be an attempt by the regime, to annihilate the opposition.
• In his book “The Second Democratic Government and Myanmar”, former minister under Thein Sein’s government U Soe Thane, reveals that the current military minister of immigration U Khin Yi is responsible for organizing pro-military rallies in southern Myanmar in which pro-democracy supporters have been stabbed or punched.
• Representatives of South Koren companies, including Samsung and LG, participated at the “Dialogue for Economic Cooperation between Team Korea and Myanmar” in which junta officials were present.
CHIN STATE
• Mindat: battles between Resistance fighters and regime troops continue after the Tatmadaw sent reinforcements.
• Ngawsing village, Tedim: Chindwin reports fighting between ZRA (Zomi Revolutionary Army) and Zoland – People Defense Force (Zoland – PDF). Tension between ZRA and Zoland – PDF is intensified following ZRA’s killing of Zoland – PDF’s leader
SAGAING
• Kant Balu: pro-regime armed group Pyu Saw Htee torched and looted several civilian houses
• Pale: Resistance groups claim to have killed 32 regime soldiers in the past few days.
KAREN (KAYIN) STATE
• May Taw Thale, Lay Kay Kaw: regime troops fired heavy artillery
• Sources told DVB that Thai authorities fired towards Burmese soldiers as a response to regime soldiers firing artillery into Thai territory. On rocket fired from the Burmese side, landed in a sugarcane field, burning the crops and prompting Thai civilians to flee.
• The Karen Peace Support Network (KPSN) reported that 4,000 civilians have been displaced by the conflict between the KNLA and regime troops this week.
MANDALAY
• Chaunggyi village, Thabeikkyin township: Thiha Naing (25) was shot dead by the regime while riding his motorbike. His wife, who was sitting in the back, got injured
MAGWAY
• Ngamyaing, Myaing: regime troops torched over 30 civilian houses
• Hnam Khar, Gangaw: regime troops attacked the village (some sources report an airstrike), forcing civilians to flee. Some houses have been torched.
ARAKAN (RAKHINE) STATE
• Toungup: Min Ko Oo, chairman of the Toungup Youth Network, arrested for allegedly supporting Resistance armed groups in Yangon.
YANGON
• Thanlyin: regime troops raided a “safe house”, killing 2 Resistance fighters and arresting 3. One member of the People’s Defence Forces committed suicide to avoid being tortured by the regime.
MON STATE
• Belin: the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) seized the Kyat Thaung Seit Military Council Camp.
• Thaton: the Karen National Union imposes a night curfew from 6pm to 6am
• Mawlamyine: former military doctor Chan Myae Aung has been arrested under section 505 (A) for criticizing the regime on Facebook.
• Mokkanin, Ye: clashes between local Resistance fighters and regime soldiers.
