Lay Kay Kaw, Myawaddy, Karen State: over 3,000 civilians have been displaced since a conflict between the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and the regime broke out yesterday. According to sources other local ethnic armed organizations and the People Defense Forces (PDF), joined the fight against the regime. Dozens of regime soldiers have been reportedly killed. Regime troops fired shells at civilians attempting to flee the conflict by the Myanmar/Thai border, and apparently, some shells landed in Thai territory. The Tatmadaw has often fired into Thai territory, or entered the Thai airspace during airstrikes launched against the Karen population.
POLITICS, ECONOMY AND OTHER NEWS
• Yesterday it was reported that the Federal Political Negotiation and Consultative Committee (FPNCC), met with regime representatives in Mong La, Kengtung, Shan State. FPNCC consists of UWSA, Arakan Army (AA), Kachin Independence Army (KIA), MNDAA (Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army) and TNLA (Ta’ang National Liberation Army). The Irrawady reports that talks were brokered by China and were aimed at maintaining the status quo. According to sources the junta is concerned that northern EAOs could join pro-democracy armed groups.
• In Mandalay, the regime seized the house of U Thein Oo, the National Unity Government’s minister of justice. In Myitkyina it seized the house in Myitkyina of Dr. Hkalen Tu Hkawng, the NUG’s Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation. In the past few months, the regime seized several properties belonging to members of the opposition.
• The military regime is ordering its soldiers to report Khit Thit Media’s Facebook page in order to shut it down. Khit Thit Media is one of the most active independent local news outlet operating in Myanmar and currently has over 3.5 million followers.
• The Special Advisory Council for Myanmar (SACM) is asking foreign governments and the UN to designate the junta as a terrorist organization. The regime’s intent is clearly to target civilians with violence to provoke a state of terror. As a terrorist organization, the regime would lose access to weapons
• The Irrawady published an article on crony U Aung Myo Min Din, a hotelier, currently chairman of the Myanmar Hotelier Association. He was a student of Min Aung Hlaing’s wife, Daw Kyu Kyu Hla in high school. KAREN (KAYIN) STATE
• More than 1,000 civilians have crossed the Myanmar/Thai border following the regime’s attacks in Lay Kay Kaw (Myawaddy) and surrounding area. Regime troops fired shells into Thai territory while targeting the people fleeing. Thousands of civilians remain in the Karen jungles as the conflict between the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and the Tatmadaw is developing.
• Myawaddy: the Border Guard Forces (BGF, an armed group under the control of the military regime), is threatening to draft 15 men from each ward and is extorting large sums of money from those who refuse. (Source: Mizzima)
SAGAING
• Myaung: 7 regime soldiers killed during an attack by the local Resistance.
SHAN STATE
• Monekoe: clashes between the Kokang Army (MNDAA) and the regime continue. One Kokang soldier killed. Airstrikes by the regime have been reported.
• According to Shan News, the Shan State Progress Party (SSPP) has forcibly recruited two minors. The recruitment of children by the Burmese army and by ethnic armed organizations (EAO) has been a problem in Myanmar for decades.
KACHIN STATE
• Injanyan: a child was injured during an airstrike launched by the Tatmadaw
KARENNI (KAYAH) STATE
• Demoso: battle between Resistance fighters of the KNDF and regime. At least 5 regime soldiers killed. 2 injuries reported on the KNDF side
ARAKAN (RAKHINE) STATE
• 199 Rohingya have been sentenced to a maximum 5 years of prison for attempting to “illegally migrate” to Malaysia.
