Danny Fenster has been sentenced to 11 years of prison. He was found guilty of unlawful association, incitement and visa breaches. These charges are based on his relationship with Myanmar Now, a news outlet that was banned by the regime after the coup, but his lawyers clearly proved that he resigned from Myanmar Now to join Frontier Myanmar as a managing director in 2020, long before the coup. Danny is now facing additional charges, terrorism and sedition, which carry sentences of up to 20 years of prison each.
Some observers consider this sentence as proof that the Junta does not care about what the international community thinks, but in my opinion this may be not true. We had several proofs that the generals do care about international legitimacy.
The military regime is using Danny Fenster and humanitarian aid access as “hostages” to negotiate with the international community. It’s a sign of weakness, rather than strength.
Hopefully Danny Fenster will return home soon.
Let’s not forget that the military regime has arrested over 10,000 civilians so far. Many of them face torture and unfair trials. Dozens of journalists are still in jail. Over 130 civilians have been tortured to death.
The regime must fall
